How Fluently works

Everything the app does, tab by tab. Updated 2026-10-02 for iPhone with iOS 17 or later.

Getting started

Short answer: install Fluently, pick the language you want to learn and the one you speak, tell it why you are learning and how much you already know, and your first lesson starts right away. The whole setup takes about two minutes.

  1. Pick your languages. The language you are learning and the one you speak. Translations are shown in your language.
  2. Tell it where you are. A short placement step lets you skip the parts of the course you already know.
  3. Set a goal and reminders. Choose a daily goal and, if you want, the times you would like a nudge.
  4. Do your first lesson. A few minutes, mostly speaking and listening.

The app has four tabs: Learn (the course), Study (reviews, drills, conversations and stories), Practice (scenarios, topics and personas) and Progress.

The course

There are full courses in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian, Turkish. Every course has the same shape:

  • 8 sections from A1 to B2, each with a theme (First Steps, Everyday Life, Making Plans and so on).
  • Five units per section, each with five lessons and a review, 248 playable lessons in all.
  • 1,000 phrases, each with a short tip that explains that language's quirk: gender, politeness, a false friend.
  • A grammar guidebook for every section, with examples from the phrases you learned.
  • A checkpoint conversation at the end of most units: a role-play that uses what the unit just taught, like ordering a coffee after the Food and Drinks unit. It is optional and never blocks the next unit.

Each phrase is always spoken by the same character (Maya, Nova, Ken, Rosa, Pip or Milo), so lines stick to a face and a voice. To switch or add a language, tap the language at the top of the Learn or Progress tab. See each course in detail: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian, Turkish.

Inside a lesson

A lesson is around 16 quick steps that introduce five new phrases and recycle older ones. The step types:

Word card
Meet a new phrase: hear it, see the meaning and the tip, then say it.
Speak
Say the phrase out loud. It is scored and the words to work on are marked.
Listen and choose
Hear the line and pick what it means.
Build the sentence
Tap word tiles into the right order.
Fill the blank
Complete a sentence with the missing word.
Match pairs
Pair phrases with their meanings.

Get one wrong and you see the correct answer right away; it also goes to your mistakes for later. Replaying a finished lesson counts as practice and earns half XP.

AI conversations

Short answer: open Practice, pick one of 385 scenarios, 210 topics or 41 personas, and chat in any of 29 languages. Each of your messages is rated and corrected.

  • Scenarios are role-plays with four goals, in 20 categories from Daily Life and Dining Out to Workplace, Emergencies and Banking. Browse all of them.
  • Topics are open conversations: your morning routine, favorite movies, your dream job.
  • Personas change who you talk to: a teacher, a friend, a co-worker, a Gen Z friend full of slang, a foodie, a philosopher.

In a chat you can:

  • Type, or hold the microphone and speak.
  • See each message rated Perfect, Good or Revision needed, and tap it for a better way to say it and why.
  • Tap any reply to translate it, or tap a word for its meaning.
  • Ask for suggestions when you do not know what to say next.
  • Save useful lines, undo your last message or refresh the conversation.
  • Set the level so your partner uses simpler or richer language.

Voice calls

From a chat, from a scenario or from Study, start a call to talk hands-free. Your partner listens, answers with a voice, and you can interrupt as you would on a real call. Turn on subtitles if you need to read along, change the level, mute or pause. When you hang up, the summary shows your accuracy, time, turns and the XP you earned, and the goals you completed carry over to the chat.

Speaking and pronunciation

Fluently needs Microphone and Speech Recognition permission to hear you. If you said no at first, turn them on in iOS Settings → Fluently, or tap Open Settings when the app asks.

Speak steps in lessons and the Speak drill in Study score your pronunciation and show which words to work on. Pronunciation mistakes are kept so you can practice exactly those again. In chats and calls, speech is turned into text with your iPhone's recognizer; for a language your device cannot recognize, the app tells you and you can type instead.

The Study tab

Conversation
Call or chat with a partner who uses everything you have learned in the course so far, or with any persona.
Review
Mistakes (phrases and feedback you got wrong), Words (everything you have learned) and Saved (lines you bookmarked in chats).
Skill practice
Speak (say your phrases out loud, scored), Listen (tap what you hear, nothing written) and Match Madness (pair words against the clock).
Collections
Stories and the grammar guidebooks.
Suggested for today
Weak words you keep missing, a quick review of your current unit, and a daily lesson built from your own phrases from chats and scenarios.

Stories

18 short stories per course, six each at A1, A2 and B1. One of the characters reads the whole story aloud; you can read or listen, and answer a few questions at the end.

Streaks, XP and progress

Lessons, conversations, calls and stories all earn XP and keep your daily streak. Streak freezes cover a missed day, and reminders can nudge you at the times you pick. The Progress tab shows your week, your stats, the words you know, your mistakes and your achievements.

Free and Pro

Fluently is free to download. Your first 3 lessons are free, and so are the Speak and Listen drills on the phrases you have learned. Fluently Pro unlocks the full course, unlimited conversations and calls, stories and unlimited Match Madness.
